Glass lamination process and apparatus

Abstract

A process for making a laminate comprising: positioning a polyvinylbutyral sheet, having a moisture content below 0.35 percent by weight of the polyvinylbutyral sheet, opposite at least one rigid substrate; pre-heating the at least one rigid substrate, or the polyvinylbutyral sheet, or any combination thereof, to a tacking temperature; and tacking the polyvinylbutyral sheet and the at least one rigid substrate through a short term pressure application using a nip roll without using vacuum bag de-airing to form a pre-laminate; and heating the pre-laminate at a temperature and for a time effective to bond the polyvinylbutyral sheet to the at least one rigid substrate. Said heating is conducted at a pressure ranging from about 1 atmosphere to about 3 atmospheres; wherein said pre-laminate is not subjected to de-airing with vacuum treatment at less than about 1 atmosphere, and without a subsequent or preceding autoclave step at a pressure above 3 atmospheres.
